Winter Maintenance Work

Many of you may have noticed a transparent covering over the pilothouse and Texas Deck on the SS Nenana at Pioneer Park. We are pleased to announce that the Fairbanks North Star Borough is doing Winter Maintenance Repair Work on the boat to help protect the vessel from further weather deterioration.

Repairs to the gutters and downspouts have been completed deferring water off the boat that was causing significant damage. Repairs will still need to be made to decks, but this will stop future damage until those repairs can be completed.

The tenting around the Pilot House is in hopes of patching areas allowing water to drain into the boat’s interior. Unfortunately, temperatures may not allow this work to be completed before winter. The upper deck is being scraped and cleaned.

Temporary shoring has been put up for support under deteriorated edges for safety. We hope this will make the removal of snow off the decks possible this winter.

Update on the SS Nenana

L. Paul Zankich, Marine Engineer and principal owner of the Columbia -Sentinel Engineers, Inc., was in Fairbanks in Aug of 2021 to inspect the SS Nenana with Design Alaska Inc. along with Engineer Matthew Reckard.

This is an essential first step in getting an accurate report of the condition of the SS Nenana. L. Paul Zankich has many years of experience working on wooden boats, which is becoming a thing of the past in today’s world. Paul did an inspection of the boat for the Friends of SS Nenana in 2019; this allows him to compare the changes in the ship from environmental conditions over the last two years, which is vital for the boat’s future and how to maintain her.

We were excited to see Paul again!

The SS NENANA Needs Your Voice

The Nenana needs your help again to stay on the CIP list for repairs! So far, the budget for the SS Nenana is the same, but that could change with the public hearing on June 25.

Right now, the boat is set up for repairs in two phases—ordinance 2020-12 regarding the SS NENANA Restoration phase I and II.

Chief of Staff Jim Williams has said, “Assuming the CIP makes it through public hearings with no changes on the SS Nenana Phase I project, we can start moving forward on the project scoping phase right away.”

Your voices saved the SS Nenana from destruction once before. We need to make sure you’re heard again on the importance of this National Historic Landmark. She is the last steamer left in Alaska that ran the Tanana and Yukon rivers. It is so important she is saved for future generations. She is a living museum of history. She is also a significant draw for tourists coming to Fairbanks to see this flagship.

The Finance Committee will be meeting on June 8 and June 25 on this matter.
